Car causes heavy damage to Skyway toll plaza

A van burst into flames while the driver was paying toll at the Skyway, damaging a toll plaza on Wednesday.

The Skyway O&M Corp. (SOMCO) and the National Police Highway Patrol Group's Skyway Investigation Office are now investigating the early-morning incident at the Filinvest toll plaza.

Initial reports indicate that the Dodge-Ram Van with license plate ULP-111 was on full stop as its driver, Joel Capellan of 302 Brilliant Street Shineland V, Cabuyao, Laguna, was paying toll when thick smoke and flames burst at the bottom of the dashboard. Despite the efforts of Skyway and South Luzon Tollways' personnel to put off the fire using extinguishers, the flames spread rapidly on the vehicle, then on to the toll booths beside the car.

No one was hurt in the incident, but it heavily damaged the car and the Skyway's toll booths and electronic equipment, totally burning the traffic lights, the e-pass antenna and other electrical wiring and conduits. (Business Mirror)
